I'm not sure which bird this feather came from, but it made some great shadows on the paper. Depending on the position of the light source, the shadow could be elongated, or kept short and defined. I enjoyed playing around with the silhouettes, which I then captured in pencil, carefully drawing around the shadows. The feather was repositioned and the shadow redrawn over the top to create layers of interesting lines. Since then I have had further ideas about how I would like to develop this, so watch this space!
Here I wanted to try filling the delicate areas with washes of watercolour paint, so I wet the area with water then dropped a brush-load of colour onto it to see what would happen: then I repeated the process using other organic objects and colours.
