Ship Ceiling Mural

For one of my more unusual commissions, I was asked to paint a mural on the ceiling of the hold in the Dutch Ship, Albatros, used as a cafe/bar where live music and Dutch pancakes are regularly enjoyed. The wooden ceiling panels with beams inbetween reminded me of a garden trellis which led me to the idea of a view looking through to the sky with flowering vines wrapped around the trellis. I designed and made a Honeysuckle stencil to create the vines artwork and given the yellow ochres, mahogany reds and emerald greens already present in the room, I used these colours. For the sky, I created a textured cloud effect using a glaze. The final additions were some sea birds and given the name of the boat, it was an easy decision to make one of these birds an albatross.
